Basket Coiling with blanket stitch by Brynhild Tophøj

This book gives a clear and practical introduction to coiling techniques using blanket stitch. Suitable for both beginners and skilled basket weavers, it provides thorough basic techniques and shares many ideas for shapes, colours, materials and technical solutions. You can start with Brynhild’s instructions and move on to design your own projects!

It includes instructions for projects such as coasters, circular baskets, various rectangular bags, a tool basket, placemats, trays, purses and baskets with beads. It also contains information about creating lids and handles for your baskets, as well as instructions to create an oval shaped basket.

Materials used in the book are jute twine, flax, paper yarn and linen thread, but raffia can be substituted in all projects. Keep in mind that the nature of raffia may result in a slightly different outcome, due to variations in the length and width of each strand.

Natural grasses and reeds from the garden may also be suitable for coiling with blanket stitch.

Brynhild Tophøj has worked with coiling techniques for years and taught since 2014. Her Danish exhibits include Læsø Art Festival, The Flax Weaving Museum in Krengerup Manor, Denmark’s Industrial Museum in Horsens, Bovbjerg Lighthouse and The Red Warehouse in Hobro.
